Letter from Allan Patience, my thesis and course work supervisor for postgraduate work at Flinders University, South Australia, 16 January, 1981.
We became close. He was particularly entertained by my thesis, The Glamour and the Grot: Towards an Ethnography of the Gay Bars of Adelaide.
Allan used to say, "Whatever you do, John, don't become an academic."
He himself went on to have a distinguished academic career.
